Seeking out deficiencies
Phosyn´s Senior Agronomist David Bilsborough features this week in the UK publication "Farmer´s Weekly". The article focuses on targeting nutrient deficiencies early - once symptoms are seen it is usually too late. Prevention of deficiency is achieved by using soil analysis and early season plant tissue checks are also a useful tool in avoiding "hidden hunger" or sub-clinical deficiencies.
"Growers need to look beyond phosphorus, potassium, magnesium and pH levels and include all nutrients that could have an impact on plant growth and development."
Tests for manganese, copper, zinc, boron, molybdenum, iron, sulphur and calcium levels should be analysed. They are vital to plant health."
David then talks about timing of trace element inputs and the importance of early applications.
"The first application of manganese or zinc to cereals should go on at the three-leaf stage. If necessary a second dose can be made mid-tillering, and in the case of severe deficiency, a third application at growth stage 30-31 may be needed."
Other topics covered are sulphur depletion in the UK, foliar nutritional inputs to potato and oilseed rape (canola) crops and tank mixing.
