“Grasstrac improved the quality of hay and haylage”
David Mortimer, BHS Approved Livery Yard - West Sussex
Farm Profile
In 1985 a lot of gravel was extracted from the farmland and the land was
then reinstated and seeded with new grass leys. 20 years on, some of this
grass had deteriorated badly due to the poor quality of the soil and some
had to be reseeded.
Traditionally, much hay has been made but over the last couple of years
more and more grass has been turned into haylage owing to increased demand.
The farm specialises in making smaller sized bales (approx 25kg) as most
of their customers are one horse owners and are unable to handle the larger
sized bales. David Mortimer believes he has perfected the technique, by
learning from previous mistakes, both his own and others!
The Problem
Making hay and haylage of good quality is essential to David’s business.
With the poor quality of the top soil and not wanting to rely entirely on
artificial fertilisers, it was decided to try a new product – Grasstrac.
The Grasstrac Experience
David says that the grass was entirely different after Grasstrac and seems
to be more palatable both in the hay and haylage with customers stating
that many of their horses seem to prefer the farm’s haylage to some of
the well-known branded varieties.
